Ride Waiting – Parent Information
Academic Year 2015-2016
About
Ride Waiting is a service provided at no additional cost to parents for students who . . .
Parents must arrange transportation for their students to be picked up no later than 5:30 p.m. Note: The cell phone signal is occasionally weak in the general area around Harding Academy (e.g., it might take 5 minutes or more for a text to be delivered). Please make all plans and arrangements and communicate them with your student(s) before the end of the school day.
Procedures
After the final announcements, students have approximately 20 minutes to leave campus or go to a designated school-related practice or extracurricular activity. After 3:00 p.m., students are not permitted to be in the halls, unless accompanied by a supervising teacher or parent. All students who do not have transportation by 2:55 p.m. must go immediately to the senior/president’s hallway (east side of campus) and enter the appropriate classroom where Ride Waiting is located.
Students must take care of all needs before arriving, including going to the restroom. Generally, students must wait until 4:00 p.m. before being permitted to go to the restroom. Students may not be allowed to leave the classroom at all, except for emergencies. The individual Ride Waiting teacher’s classroom rules may vary; however, the following are the general rules for all students:
Expectations
Students are expected to listen and follow all directions given by each teacher supervising Ride Waiting. They are also expected to follow the procedures described above all year. Parents are expected to provide transportation for their student(s). After 5:30 p.m., remaining students will have to wait outside the front door and will have no direct supervision. To avoid this situation, a parent should talk directly to a supervising teacher about any extenuating circumstances that would prevent the student from being picked up by the designated time.
Consequences
Any student who does not follow the above procedures will be disciplined as detailed below. Teachers will send a list of all the names of students who arrive after 3:00 p.m. without an excused note or email from another teacher to the upper school administrators. Students who are habitually late will receive the same consequences.
Students who do not follow the procedures or instructions after a verbal warning from the teacher will be written up in a report to the Dean of Students, Mr. Goddard, and then receive the following consequences:
Any student who displays defiance or repeatedly fails to follow procedures may be refused entry for the remainder of the school year at the expense of the parent. When a student who loses the privilege of being in Ride Waiting, the parents must arrange for transportation no later than 2:45 p.m.
Final Note
Harding Academy values student security and safety. Parents are encouraged to send a note with their student(s) giving permission to go to events on campus during Ride Waiting, to ride with another adult or older sibling, and/or to inform the teacher of any circumstance that will help facilitate the Ride Waiting experience for both parents and students.
